Saturday SLAM sessions, or SucSaturday SLAMcess through Leadership, Academics, and Mentoring, are a key component of the Freedom Fellow experience.
Waking up early and coming to extra classes for several hours each Saturday is a big way in which fellows demonstrate their commitment to both the Discipline and Education components of the SCFP’s values.
During Saturday SLAM sessions, students rotate from a one hour Novel Study course to a test prep course. The remainder of the session varies each week as we recruit teachers, experts, and community members to share their experiences with our students. Topics have ranged from public speaking to choosing a college major to bio-ethics to Judaism. We also have screened important films, gone on community service field trips, and volunteered at the Sunflower County Library’s Reading Buddy program. As you can see, every Saturday SLAM is never the same! Saturday SLAM sessions are dynamic, challenging, and unique.
