Academic Enrichment

Reading

First, Second, and Third Year Freedom Fellows take an additional reading course during each Saturday SLAM session. In these classes, fellows have the opportunity to read books that are a part of a college preparatory curriculum. Students have read such books as Hamlet, To Kill a Mockingbird, Fahrenheit 451, and The Autobiography of Malcolm X. All Freedom Fellows are given reading materials for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring break “challenges.” All years of Freedom Fellows also read books and plays as a group prior to seeing live performances as they arise at area theatres and universities. Excitingly, the Freedom Fellows will get the opportunity to read Aurthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman as well as see a staging of the play at the Greenville Community Theatre

College Prep

Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Year Freedom Fellows take a College Prep course during each Saturday SLAM session. In these classes, fellows learn about creating resumes, writing application essays, interviewing for admission and for scholarships, studying for the ACT, and more.

Visual Arts

This semester, our Freedom Fellows have been taking a Visual Arts class once a week. During this class, a teaching artist instructs the students in basic drawing skills through three main projects. With many students not having the access to art classes in school, these weekly sessions help the students learn how to creatively express themselves and discover that everyone has artistic ability. Keep your eyes peeled for a Freedom Project Art Show in December!

Study Sessions

Four times a week, Freedom Fellows have the opportunity to attend Study Sessions at the LEAD Center. There, they have resources available to them that are otherwise difficult to come by – encyclopedias, internet access, computers, printers, and a library of fiction and non-fiction books. During Study Sessions, students use the available resources to complete homework and projects for school. Even when school work is finished, the work doesn’t stop! Our Assign Yourself Wall provides five columns of challenging enrichment and critical activities that not only keep their minds working but also build skills that will help them in their future.

Once students complete the two hours of work time at the beginning of each Study Session, they have the opportunity to take a weekly class. Students participate in P.E., Oral Histoy, Visual Arts, and Hip Hop classes. These hands-on classes let the students learn through experimentation and expression.
