June Newsletter

Greetings from SCFP!

Freedom School is officially underway!  We have thirty students at the center every day taking classes in reading, writing, math, drama, and Tae Kwon Do.  In addition to academic enrichment and extracurricular activity, our Freedom Fellows are eating healthy lunches, meaning no soda, candy, or fried food.  First year Fellow DeAndre McMath describes the dietary adjustment as “not good” but admits that eating healthier food is “important because it keeps us awake and ready to learn.”

The Freedom Project is also happy to announce the arrival of two new staff members!  My name is Nick Allen and I will be the new SCFP director and author of these monthly updates. After graduating from Brown University in 2009, I joined Teach for America and took a position as a fourth grade teacher in Clarksdale, Mississippi where I taught the past two years.

Justine Moser is our wonderful new Program Director.  Justine graduated from Concordia College in 2008 and joined Teach for America as a fifth grade teacher in Leland, Mississippi.  After completing two years in the classroom, Justine worked for Southern Bancorp while continuing her involvement in arts education through Greenville Arts Council and Delta Center Stage.

Both Justine and I are thrilled by the opportunity to work with children in Sunflower County and we look forward to continuing in the rich tradition of the Freedom Project.

Cheers,

Nick Allen

Dear SCFP Family,

It’s an exciting night at the Sunflower County Freedom
Project!  One of our 2008 alums, current Louisiana State
University Junior, Arquavious “Qua” Gordon, will be a contestant on –
would you like to solve the puzzle? — Wheel of Fortune!  Help us
cheer Qua on at 6:30pm this evening!

You can read more about Qua’s Wheel of
Fortune adventure in a feature article in the Bolivar

May Newsletter

Dear SCFP Family,

You may have seen this photo about four years ago as
the Freedom Project celebrated the high school graduation of one of our Fellows,
Lukendric Washington.  Luke was, as you can imagine, very excited
about the coming fall when he’d be moving off to North Carolina to
attend the prestigious UNC-Chapel Hill to study Poltical Science.

Fast forward four years and you’ll find yourself with a new image – no longer just
an eager kid from Sunflower County, but a college graduate – a
determined young man with a future full of possibilities.  Your
donations helped Luke achieve a goal that he set a full decade ago,
back when he first stepped inside the Sunflower County Freedom Project.

In just three weeks, 30 – 40 new Freedom Fellows in grades 7, 8, and 9
will be setting similar goals for their own futures.  We’ve had a tough fund raising season so
far this year and only have enough money to get us through about 2 months of
programming.  Help make a college education a reality for
our deserving students, just like you did for Luke.  Please donate now to the Sunflower County
Freedom Project.

Kind regards,

Sarah Hylden & the SCFP Staff

Dear SCFP Family,

At the Freedom Project, our foremost goal is to improve
the lot of the local community – we do that everyday by preparing
Sunflower County’s young people for success through achieving a college
education.  But, over the past few weeks, we’ve been working on
beautifying the aesthetics of the community in addition to cultivating
young minds.

We worked with cartoonist Mark Pett to
design a mural that will span the front of our building and share our
values with the community.  Each panel shows a different aspect of
LEADership – Love, Education, Action
and Discipline.  The center panel carries the
quote that has inspired us from the first time we opened our doors,
“Education is the seed of freedom.”  Our visiting college
students, Freedom Fellows, staff, and volunteers have all contributed
to the success of this mural showing that teamwork can create
incredible results!  Stop by and see our project! Or, check out our flickr page for pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scfp.

As always, we can’t do it without your support – please consider
making a contribution to help keep bringing academic opportunities to
our deserving students.

Dear SCFP Family,

It’s Alternative Spring Break time at the LEAD
Center!  This month, we’ve had visiting groups from across the
country.  Last week, members of the Black Student Movement of
UNC-Chapel Hill came down to lead our Fellows in a week-long Health and
Wellness camp.  This week, students from Harvard are here teaching
our kids about civic engagement.  Both groups have really ramped
up the energy level at the Freedom Project and kept students engaged in
learning.  As part of the Civic class, the Freedom Project hosted
a panel of elected officials at the LEAD Center so students had the
chance to ask their mayor and alderman tough questions about issues
pertaining to youth.  This may have been our young leaders first
foray into politics, but we’re sure it won’t be their last!

Donations have gotten off to a slow start this year – please consider
making a contribution to help keep bringing academic opportunities to
our deserving students.  We can’t do it without you!

January Newsletter

Dear SCFP Family,

Already it’s February! January flew past at the
LEAD Center as Fellows got back into the swing of the school
year. We started off our programming with a trip to Augsburg
College in sunny Minnesota for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Our
students were the main event at a ceremony honoring Dr. King.
They presented a stirring rendition of Five Feet Four Inches Forward, an
SCFP original play documenting the life and work of Civil Rights Leader
and Sunflower County resident, Fannie Lou Hamer.

Parlez-vous français? Back at the LEAD Center,
Fellows started taking French classes on Wednesdays with Madam Steeby,
our wonderful new volunteer. They can already name lots of class
room items and tell their locations. We’re excited to see how far
they’ll get by the end of the semester.

It’s been an exciting January at the
LEAD Center and we’re looking forward to what February will
bring! Thank you for your continued support of our programs – we
wouldn’t be able to do it without you!

Kind regards,

December Newsletter

Dear SCFP Family,

Happy Holidays from the Sunflower County Freedom Project!  As you decide which charitable contributions to make before the end of the year, we hope you will consider supporting us.

As many of you already know, the cards are stacked against Sunflower County students.  The county has a teenage pregnancy rate roughly triple the national average and more than 40% of students entering high school will never make it to graduation.  The Freedom Project gives Sunflower kids a real chance at beating those odds.  We take kids in as rising seventh graders, and we follow them until they get into a college of their choice.  Academic enrichment and leadership development are our bread and butter, but we also offer a variety of unique experience to expose our students to the world beyond the Delta – college visits, camping trips, drama tours, language training, and more.

In the past few months, the Freedom Project has been as busy as ever.  Our students have been invited to perform in Minnesota as a part of Augsburg College’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration.  Our students have been selected to participate in camps at the University of Mississippi studying things like entrepreneurship and racial reconciliation.  We have been invited to film screenings at the BB King Museum and to writer workshops with the SonEdna Foundation.  We are completely dedicated to bringing our students unique academic opportunities, whether at the LEAD Center or around the country.

The Freedom Project is part of the long-term solution to the problems facing the Delta. We run our year-round programming for less than $300 per day and have never taken any government money – we instead rely on the generosity of you, our SCFP extended family.  Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to our program by sending a gift to us by mail or by making a donation on line at: www.sunflowerfreedom.org/contribute. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Sarah Hylden and the SCFP Staff

November Newsletter

Greetings from the SCFP!

From international visitors to supernatural ones, the Freedom Fellows have certainly had a busy October!

This month, Fellows got to visit with international exchange students studying at Ole Miss.  Freedom Fellows got a taste of France, Italy, China, Taiwan, Germany, Sweden, and Peru, learning a bit about the culture and language of each country.  Everyone had a fantastic time – including the visitors!  They were so excited about the SCFP that they’re planning to join us again next semester with a new batch of international students.  We can’t wait!

Midway through the month, our Halloween committee started planning for a terrifyingly spooky night at the LEAD Center.  Students took a haunted tour of the old dojang before being admitted to a party where there was apple bobbing, pumpkin painting, lots of sweet treats (which are usually contraband at the Freedom Project), and a visit from former students and staff.  These fun activities are important breaks for our students and always serve to re-energize them for study sessions and Saturday SLAM programs.

With October behind us, we’re excited to kick-off another eventful month of programming.  As November is the month of Thanksgiving, we’d like to thank each and every one of you for being a part of the SCFP Family and ensuring that our students have the best opportunities available to them!

Let’s make it happen!

October Newsletter

posted December 15th, 2010 in Newsletter

Greetings from the SCFP!

We’ve kept our Freedom Fellows as busy as ever this month.  Between Saturday School homework, drama, Swahili, and extracurricular opportunities (like the ACT Prep challenge for 5th and 6th years), our Fellows are making huge strides toward achieving a college education.

But, the staff of the Freedom Project have been tackling some challenges as well.  With the help of family and community member advice, as well as YouTube and Google instructions, we are proud to say light is illuminating Sunflower again – fluorescent light!  We can now re-wire ballasts, replace sockets, and bring light to the Center, all while avoiding electrocution!  The library no longer looks like a cave and the students can see the board in the green room once again!

We also took on the challenge of our beloved Silver Bullet, a trusty old van that once carried Freedom Fellows across the country on drama and field trips.  It had been enjoying semi-retirement due to a drop in attendance over the past few years.  But, this fall, we’ve recruited enough students that we once again need the additional transportation space!  We armed ourselves with cans of Raid and defeated a swarm of wasps in our attempt to resurrect the vehicle.  Ultimately, however, we discovered that a bad transmission will keep us from saving the Silver Bullet.  The dilemma we now face is immense: we have a new pool of students in Moorhead, Mississippi, but we don’t have the means of transporting them to the Center.

Please consider a donation toward the purchase of a new van; the talented students of Moorhead Middle School deserve a chance to study at the Freedom Project, and something so menial as a broken-down van shouldn’t keep them from reaching their fullest potentials.

Let’s make it happen!

September Newsletter

posted December 15th, 2010 in Newsletter

Greetings from the SCFP!

Another school year is upon us here at the LEAD Center!

After our inaugural Saturday SLAM this past weekend, we can already tell it’s going to be a successful semester!  More than 35 students have passed through our doors already and we’re expecting our recruitment efforts to bring in more this week.  Our secret weapon?  Chris Perkins!  Mr. Perkins has arrived back in Sunflower and is already hard at work.  His Tae Kwon Do class is extremely popular, he’s teaching high school classics like The Odyssey and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, and students already know – if you don’t bring homework to study session – you’ll be doing vocab-building exercises with Mr. Perkins!

Chris was also featured in a full page article in Indianola’s Enterprise-Tocsin. You can read the article on our here.

This year we’re offering Reading, Writing, Math, Tae Kwon Do, Swahili, and college prep programming and it’s entirely thanks to your support.  The donations to bring Mr. Perkins back have been invaluable and we’d like to recognize a special donation from one of our summer interns, Ms. Georgie Smyser (read her blog post here).

Georgie saw a real need at the Freedom Project this summer – she got to experience the full wrath of our ancient copier, purchased back when we were first starting off in the late 90s.  After a summer of coaxing copies from the old machine, Georgie did something amazing – she donated a new one!  We’re saving tons of time with the new machine – time that can be now spent with students.  Thank you, Georgie!

Thanks to your continued support, the Freedom Project is ready for another great year!  Let’s make it happen!
