College can be very expensive. The cost of some colleges depends on the tuition, housing, transportation, food, books, clothes and fun money. You want to start saving during your high school years. When going in to your 11th grade year, you might want to get a summer job to help pay for your college tuition. When you're in your 12th grade year, you often have the privilege of getting out of school a couple of hours early. During that time, find a job, work, and start saving. Don't depend on your parents all the time, because there will be times when they will not be able to help you. This is all about becoming an adult. Start being independent. Learn how to use your money wisely. Also while in school, get involved with the programs your school may offer. Some can get you a scholarship. Last but not least, the government may give you money in the form of financial aid to help pay for your college tuition. Scholarships Scholarships are awards given to students for different purposes to help them pay for college. There are many different kinds of scholarships, such as Academic, Music, Athletic, ROTC, and Art. If you do well on the PSAT, for instance, you'll get a national merit scholarship. That will also help you get accepted to a good college! Financial Aid Most every one who goes to college will need financial aid. Financial aid is when you have to borrow money from the government. There are three kinds of financial aid. The three types of financial aid are Grants, Students Loans and Work Study. The Grant you don't have to pay back. The government just gives you money to help you pay for college and you don't have to pay it back. The Grant is usually for people who can't afford to pay everything. The next one is Student Loans. A Student Loan is something like the Grant, but you have to pay it back. You can get more money off the Student Loans from going to graduate school than from going to undergraduate school. You can get 20,000 dollars or 100 dollars, depending on your need. You have to pay all of it back. If you don't, you are in big trouble and could have it deducted from your paycheck. It seems like a good thing once you go to college, but once you get out of college you have to find a way to pay all of that money back. It can be very hard to do if you don't have the money. The third one is Work Study. Work Study is when you get to college and there is a job waiting for you once you get there. No matter what your work habits are there will be a job waiting for you. The job will help you pay for some of the things that you can't pay for. The job that you will have will usually be on campus, whether it is fixing food or a simple task like picking up paper off the campus. Financial aid helps millions and millions of people all over the country go to college and become something. In order to get financial aid you will have to apply for it while in high school. Then the government gives you how much it thinks that you need. |
