After Freedom Day each summer, the first-year Freedom Fellows take off on a tour of the South. They visit important civil rights sites such as Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Memphis, and they meet people who were involved in the movement. This kind of firsthand experience makes their academic work more meaningful and helps motivate them to take action in their communities.
