Sankofa
The Documentary
What is Sankofa?
Sankofa is a Akan word that means, "We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward; so we understand why and how we came to be who we are today."
The documentary is mainly a comparison between the Civil Rights movement during the 1950's to the Civil Rights movement today. In the 1960's there were clear cut goals to achieve in the struggle for equality: School and public facility intergration, equal voting rights, equal protection under the law, equal employment opportunities, etc. Young people all over the nation saw problems and decided to take action to make a difference. Today, the goals are not as clear cut, but the problems are just as visible. In Sunflower County alone, high school drop out rates, proverty, and teen pregnancy are just some of the problems. We will use this documentay to focus on how we can use the clear cut goals during the 1950's to empower youth today.

Major Points Brought Out In The Documentary:
> Just because time changes the same problems still occur.
>Standing out makes a big difference when you are doing something positive.
> Some of the same actions taken to solve problems during the Civil Rights movement during the 1950's can be taken into consideration to solve problems resulting in communities today.
