What is SCFP Media Production?

The SCFP Media Production is a organization located within the properious non-profit program of the Sunflower County Freedom Project. Media Production started out only as a summer class project for SCFP fellows who were interested, but now the project has grown into a year round project. Fellows who are interested in Media Production commite themselves to participating in the year round program as well as learning new media skills. Fellows in the porgram worked together to produce different projects to inform others of the program as well as inform others about the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the Delta.

Where Did We Begin?

In October 2004, the Sunflower County Freedom Project applied for a grant from a program called CTCnet. CTC net is a national media program, which supplies other oganizations grants and resources in developing and maintaining their media production program. CTC net funded a grant entitled "Youth Visions For Stronger Neighorhoods, and among 85 applicants the Sunflower County Freedom Project was selected along with six other organizations for the grant. CTC net funded up to $22,000 for programs that focused on empowering youth to create positive change through multimedia projects.

The SCFP Media Production Goal

Media Production main goal is to produce a project mainly centered around "Planning Our Future, By Mapping Our Past."

Within this project we strive to meet these particular goals:

> Develop a thorough understanding of the Civil Rights movement in Sunflower County, it's participants, and its lasting effects.

> Determine what steps students today can take to improve their education and build stronger communities through educational and social activism.

> Create a documentary that traces the history of the Civil Rights movement in Sunflower County and explore how students today can learn from the action taken by leaders of the past.

> To produce a wedsite that will explain the project, the documentary, and include and interactive map of Sunflower County's civil right history. The website will also have helpful suggestions for students and how they can take a stand in their community.
